The scoop of the day

Summer Vibes

As most of you who follow Blueberry Pancake Publishing know, I’m spending my summer at my summer cottage in Michigan. This is the same lake I was raised on some… um let’s just say a few years ago. When I was a little girl, my grandmother would spend her summers up here in the woods of northern Michigan overlooking beautiful Little Bear Lake. I loved this place so much I named my dog that I loved beyond words, Little Bear. As most of you know, my first children’s book, Excuse Me Sir, Do You Bark English? was about my precious dog Little Bear getting lost in the Netherlands. Now that I’m a grandma, I love that I am following in her footsteps and spending my summers here.

As I sit here on my deck overlooking the lake, black squirrels and blue jays are having a fight about something. It’s very entertaining. This beautiful place is where I do my best writing.

  Discovery …Amazing heritage discovered
When I read for pleasure, I usually choose historical fiction. As a matter of fact, I almost always choose something to do with World War II. As this is my first full summer on the lake, it is my first time to really dig into the history of our cabin. I was already aware that our cabin was built in 1945. That was really the only information I remembered. I imagine a soldier coming home from war and coming to northern Michigan to find a little peace and quiet from the world. What better place to come than to my beloved lake? Of course, so far this is just conjuncture. But I am learning a little bit more about my cabin. I’ve been told by a few neighbors that our cottages in our certain section were the original cottages first on the lake. Apparently, there were about 5-6 log cabins that are all still standing that began Little Bear Lake. But even more exciting is the news I received yesterday from a local man who grew up here and has worked in the area his whole life is that my cabin and my neighbors were the FIRST two cabins on the lake. They were brothers and put their cabins next to each other. My grandma and grandpa came up to Little Bear Lake in the 1950’s. My sister owns our family’s original cottage. We are now at the point in our lives where we get to spend summers together. When our grandfather was still alive, he would come over to share a drink with the owners of my current cottage. I absolutely love that our families were connected then, and our cottages are still connected through my sister and me. I will be investigating this more and you can be sure a book will be coming out of this wonderful discovery.
