My Happy Place: Where Every Story Begins

Writing Without Borders

While I have a desk I return to, my true writing space isn’t bound by walls. My happy place? It’s wherever the story finds me.

Ideas hit me like a sudden storm ~ unexpected, wild, and demanding to be written. I’ve scribbled dialogue in a quiet café in Paris, outlined chapters on a tour bus weaving through London traffic, shaped scenes by the banks of the Danube River, and whispered storylines to myself on the rim of the Grand Canyon. My desk may hold my rituals, but my words have been born in corners of the world I once only dreamed of visiting.

All I need is my phone with the Notes tab open or my laptop within reach. Because for me, writing isn’t about the setting, it’s about being present when inspiration knocks, wherever I happen to be.

For me, it’s rarely a traditional desk. I’ve had those … neatly organized, perfectly arranged … and honestly, they just get in the way of my creativity. When I’m home and the words are finally making their way from my head to the page, I prefer curling my feet beneath me in a cozy chair or stretching out on the couch with a blanket nearby.

I keep things simple: a favorite candle lit, my laptop balanced just right, and maybe a notebook within reach to catch stray thoughts. This space isn’t structured, it’s soft, lived-in, and forgiving. It allows the words to come without pressure.

It’s where I show up every day, not because I must, but because I get to. It’s where I fumble through the first drafts, laugh at my own dialogue, and sometimes pause to stare out the window until the next sentence finds me.

This is my happy place. This is where every story begins.
