Why I Write for Kids

Stories That Shape Hearts and Build Foundations

I’ve always believed that stories are more than words on a page, they are seeds planted in the hearts of young readers. Those seeds grow into compassion, curiosity, and courage. Children’s books have the power to shape how a child sees themselves, the people around them, and the world they’re stepping into.

When I write for kids, I’m not just telling a story. I’m offering a place for them to belong, to dream, and to feel understood. Sometimes that’s through a silly adventure that makes them giggle. Other times it’s through a quiet moment that whispers, You’re not alone.

I often tell parents that a child’s education is like building a house. Kindergarten, in my opinion, is the foundation of that house. This is why I feel it’s such an important year. As the saying goes, It takes a village to raise a child. Each year adds another layer to that house, with new teachers and coaches joining the team, while parents act as the head contractors, working to build a solid foundation for their child’s education.

It makes my heart soar when parents tell me that my book is their child’s favorite book to read at bedtime. It lets me know that a little piece of me was planted into their hearts.

There are moments that keep me going—the sparkle in a child’s eye when they connect with a character, or the feeling of knowing my words traveled into a little heart and stayed there.

I write from my heart so that every story can be a gentle companion for children, something that encourages their imagination, comforts them on tough days and reminds them they are deeply loved and capable of wonderful things. Because when we nurture their hearts through stories, we help build a brighter, kinder world one child at a time.

The Little Seed

The seed goes down,
The roots go deep.
The stem grows up,
No time for sleep!

The sun is warm,
The rain is sweet.
The little seed
Grows strong and neat.

  1. You do everything from your heart, Lisa. I’m blessed to know you. So are your kids and every child you’ve taught (and continue to teach). You’ve planted and sowed the seeds. Your poem is precious and perfect! Much love, Karla❣️🤗🙏🏻
